It's inevitable at some point all laptops become obsolete and need to be disposed of. But where, and how do you go about this?
There is a couple of factors to consider.
To begin with, age is an important factor. The original operating system is a key indicator of this, if it came with Windows XP or Vista it's nearly guaranteed to be past its best before date no matter the condition and is only good for recycling, things have moved on quickly, and whilst it may still work those operating systems are no longer supported and may be at risk of security issues. Now, most council-run recycling centres and curb-side collections will offer this service for free, however, unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee any old data left on the machine is in safe hands. We recommend you wipe the hard drive using software designed to destroy data or remove the hard drive completely, there are plenty of guides online to render a drive useless.

Broken laptops, Windows 7 and above
